At **Clínica Girona's Clinical Analysis Laboratory**, we understand that diagnostic tests are a fundamental tool for the prevention, diagnosis, and monitoring of your health. We have a team of highly qualified professionals and cutting-edge technology to offer a wide range of clinical analyses with the maximum precision and speed.
The laboratory is committed to quality and accuracy in every analysis we carry out. We apply rigorous protocols and internal and external quality controls to ensure the reliability of the results. We work with the objective of providing professionals and patients with accurate and useful information for medical decision-making.
Our facilities span over 1,500 square metres, divided between two reference centres in the city of Girona. Both centres contain modern facilities designed to offer a professional and high-quality service.
Our sections:
Allergies
Identify potential allergens responsible for each pathology.
In the Allergy Unit, parameters such as total IgE, eosinophilic cationic protein, tryptase, and histamine are determined, which help us in the diagnosis of allergic pathology.
We identify the potential allergens responsible for the allergic pathology by studying the presence or absence of specific IgE against a broad panel of respiratory allergens, food allergens, some occupational allergens, drug allergens, insect venoms, and recombinant allergens.
Help with monitoring patients undergoing desensitising therapy. We also have the Food intolerance test to improve the quality of life for patients with gastrointestinal disorders and other associated pathologies.
Biochemistry
We study the concentration of various chemical substances in the body to provide accurate diagnoses and provide effective treatments. The analyses, which are carried out on samples of blood or other bodily fluids, allow the study of elements such as glucose, urea, cholesterol, calcium or liver enzymes, among others. The result of the analytics helps to determine the’State of vital organs I make it easier to have Accurate diagnostics and which allow the effectiveness of the treatment to be monitored.
Genetics - Molecular Biology and Hereditary Pathologies

- Cardiovascular risk and alteration of coagulation factors.
- Sterility studies.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
- Alzheimer's disease.
- Study of histocompatibility antigens for predisposition to autoimmune diseases: HLA typing of type I (A, B and C) and type II (DR, DQ). Coeliac disease, narcolepsy, arthropathies, lupus, psoriasis, diabetes...
Rapid aneuploidy detection
- Antenatal screening for trisomies 13, 18, 21 and X and Y chromosomes.
Oncology genetics:
- Hereditary cancers (breast, colon…).
- Haematological Neoplasms (molecular study of leukaemias and lymphomas: study of gene rearrangements, quantification of BCR-ABL, JAK2 gene...).
- Detection of solid cancer markers: colon cancer (MS9 gene), prostate cancer (PCA-3 gene), melanoma (tyrosinase gene), and bladder cancer (BTA antigen).
Rapid aneuploidy detection
- Prenatal testing for trisomies 13, 18, 21 and X and Y chromosomes.
Forensic genetics
- Paternity/Maternity study.
- Study of autosomal markers to establish sibling relationships.
Infectious diseases
Viral agents
- Viral load quantification: HIV, HBV, HCV.
- Genotyping and resistance studies: HIV, HBV, HCV.
- Herpesviridae Group Detection: Herpes Simplex 1+2, Cytomegalovirus (Detection and Quantification), Varicella Zoster and Epstein Barr.
- Other viruses: JC virus, Enterovirus, Parvovirus B19, BK virus...
Bacterian Agents
- Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and molecular antibiogram. Detection of atypical mycobacteria.
- Bacteria causing STIs: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, Chlamydia trachomatis.
- Pathogens causing periodontal disease.
- Molecular detection of other bacteria: Bordetella sp, Whipple's disease.
Parasites and other pathogens
- Toxoplasma gondii detection.
- Detection of *Leishmania infantum*.
Haematology coagulation
We diagnose, classify and monitor the progression of blood diseases such as leukaemias and lymphomas, and study haemoglobin alterations by analysing the cells present in the blood, their concentration, characteristics and morphology. This way, we identify the factors involved in blood clotting and monitor anticoagulant medical treatments.
Hormone Tumour Markers
We use biomarkers to diagnose pathologies related to endocrinology and oncology, thereby enabling prenatal diagnoses. Provide a reliable thing which facilitates the diagnosis of pathologies related to the fields of endocrinology, oncology, and prenatal diagnosis.
Endocrine pathologies
We perform serum, plasma, urine, and saliva parameters that allow us to understand the functioning of the endocrine glands and hormonal axes.
Oncology
Determine tumour markers that, along with other parameters, allow for the diagnosis, characterisation, treatment, and monitoring of the patient's progress.
Prenatal Diagnosis
Determine biochemical and ultrasound markers that enable the assessment of the risk of pregnancies affected by chromosomal abnormalities in the first trimester and of chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects in the second trimester. The determination of vitamin B6, B12, and vitamin D derivatives, among other parameters, helps us diagnose anaemia, osteomalacia, chronic kidney failure, or hyperparathyroidism.
Immunology
- We diagnose and monitor immunological, infectious, haemato-oncological and rheumatic conditions, among others.
- We offer support to professionals from various medical specialities for the diagnosis and monitoring of pathologies of immunological, infectious, haemato-oncological and rheumatic origin, among others.
- We use parameters that help differentiate between current or recent infections and the presence of residual antibodies (immunity), especially in the case of Pregnancy-related serologies.
Toxicology
We analyse biomarkers to identify the presence of chemical substances, mainly metals or solvents, in organisms. We are an instrumental unit that includes biomarkers of occupational exposure, biomarkers of aging, and others related to the food sector (metals, vitamins, W3-W6 fatty acids, breath tests, etc.).
The main area of activity is the analysis of biomarkers of occupational exposure to chemical substances, such as metals and solvents. We evaluate the results obtained from the biological exposure limit values of the INSHT, among other international organisations such as ACGIH, SUVA, FIOH, HSE-HSL or DFG, among others.
We perform therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for drugs such as antiepileptics, digoxin, theophylline, immunosuppressants, antibiotics, benzodiazepines, etc. Furthermore, we can also use gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for analytes that have tested positive for drugs of abuse in urine during initial screening analysis. The results obtained are assessed according to international criteria (Federal Register/ USA or EWDTS, etc.).
Microbiology, Virology and Mycology
- We diagnose infectious diseases by detecting the causative agent, obtained from biological samples. We can also monitor the sterility of spaces.
- Identify quickly the agents causing infections from techniques such as antigen detection, staining, or direct visualisation.
- We learn about the sensitivity or resistance of antimicrobial agents from cultivating and identifying the pathogen. This procedure, along with the antibiogram, allows us to achieve the most appropriate treatment and greater therapeutic success.
- In parallel, we can also carry out microbiological monitoring of hospital areas and isolate pathogenic germs in food handlers. We can advise patients, professionals, and hospital entities on clinical or epidemiological aspects within our remit.
- The main areas of operation for this department encompass bacteriology, mycobacteria, mycology, parasitology, and the sterility control of hospital spaces and equipment (operating theatres, haemodialysis, etc.).
Emergencies
Five analyses 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
