It is a priority for the Department of Health and the healthcare organisations in Catalonia

The 4th Conference on improving patient safety in the Girona regions, which was held on 15 November 2019 at the Hospital Santa Caterina in Salt, co-organised by Clínica Girona, highlighted that patient safety is a priority element in healthcare centres. The World Health Organization documentOMSThe ’Global Patient Safety Action” makes recommendations to governments and health institution managers to achieve an improvement in patient safety, stating that adverse events are one of the top 10 causes of death and disability worldwide. This global figure highlights the importance of taking action to promote and improve patient safety in healthcare centres. This has been one of the priorities and strategic lines of work for the Department of Health and healthcare organisations in Catalonia for years.
With the aim of making progress in the matter, on 15 November, the IV Conference on improving patient safety in the Girona regions took place at the Martí i Julià Health Park in Salt, promoted and co-organised by the different hospitals in the territory.

Over 100 participants

The event, fully consolidated in its fourth edition, has brought together over 100 participants. The organisers' aim is to share and debate patient safety strategies, as well as to exchange experiences and knowledge among professionals to promote initiatives that help improve and consolidate a patient safety culture.

During the opening ceremony, delivered by the president of the Catalan Health Institute (IAS), Joan Profitós, and the nursing director of Santa Caterina Hospital, Núria Batlle, the IAS president spoke of patient safety principles as “an indispensable part of clinical training, education and continuous professional development for all categories of healthcare professionals”.

This year, the conference focused on communication to minimise the causes of adverse events during care, the safe management of medications, and the role of new technologies in safety (for both professionals and patients).

The event was co-organised by Clínica Girona, Clínica Salus Infirmorum, Corporació de Salut del Maresme i la Selva, Fundació Salut Empordà, Hospital de Campdevànol, Hospital d’Olot Comarcal de la Garrotxa, Institut d’Assistència Sanitària and Serveis de Salut Integrats Baix Empordà.
