The innovative, minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedure improves the prognosis of certain joint and tendon injuries.

Girona, 9 February 2021

An interdisciplinary team comprising trauma specialists Dr. Xavier Comas and Dr. Elisa Aguilar, and Dr. Javier González de la Rosa from the Pain Unit of the Anaesthesiology Service, has been applying this advancement in regenerative medicine since late January. It is indicated for patients with painful and limiting injuries of various causes.

Clínica Girona has begun regenerative therapy with monocytes

Monocytes are immune blood cells that play a key role in tissue development and repair. The procedure involves the withdrawal of peripheral blood, its processing under sterile conditions to obtain monocytes, and finally the ultrasound-guided administration of these to the injured anatomical location.

The procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis, with no need for admission or limitations on daily life, except for avoiding strenuous activity for 48-72 hours.

The new technique started to be applied at the Clínica Girona at the end of last January, with very satisfactory results for the first patients treated.
