Clínica Girona introduce a new foetal echocardiography procedure, a precise and safe method for detecting congenital heart defects. Doctors Rosa Vila and Susana Uriel are responsible for carrying out these foetal ultrasounds, in Module A on the First Floor of the Clínica Girona (Tel. 00972 483838).
The incidence of congenital heart disease is between 0.8 and 1%of pregnancies. The majority (90% ) of congenital heart diseases occur in pregnancies without known risk factors or history.
The indication for performing a foetal echocardiogram has increased in recent years. For instance, echocardiography is important in cases such as: pregnancies achieved through in-vitro fertilisation, maternal obesity, extra-cardiac ultrasound anomaly, during the intake of certain medications during pregnancy (antidepressants, anxiolytics, antiepileptics, etc.), in diabetic patients, or with a family history of heart disease, etc.
The prenatal diagnosis offered by foetal echocardiography is of great importance as it allows for a correct assessment of the foetus's cardiological risks, thus leading to better gestational control, a better prognosis, and more efficient birth planning.
