Clínica Girona has begun a collaboration with the Josep Carreras Foundation against leukaemia. As part of this, throughout this week, from 22nd to 26th January 2024, the Carreras Foundation has set up a small stand in the foyer, at the south entrance.
The objective of this action is to raise awareness of blood cancers, to inform and sensitise people about the importance of research in curing them, and to recruit members so that their programmes can be continued. They never collect funds or donations on-site; instead, individuals who decide to contribute do so by leaving their details on a form.
The Josep Carreras Foundation Against Leukaemia is a private, charitable, non-profit organisation, founded by the tenor Josep Carreras, after he recovered from leukaemia. Carreras created the Foundation on 14 July 1988, to give back to society and science all the tokens of affection he received during his treatment, with a very clear objective: to achieve a day when leukaemia is a curable disease in all cases. Subsequently, foundations were also established in Switzerland, Germany and the United States. Its president is Josep Carreras.
Strategic Objectives
- To inform and raise awareness in society about what leukaemia and other malignant haemopathies are, such as lymphomas and multiple myeloma, among many others, and the extent to which they affect the population.
- To improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
- Increase the number of volunteer bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors and the number of people associated with the Foundation.
- To boost scientific research projects.
Activities
- The promotion and search for voluntary bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors for patients requiring a transplant who do not have a compatible family donor.
- The funding of national and international scientific research projects
- Support for hospital infrastructure
- Social services for patients and their families
- Teaching: “Farreras-Valentí” Programme”
