Girona, 17 June 2024 – Clínica Girona is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Cardiac Haemodynamics Service, the only private cardiac interventional unit in the Girona region. Since its inauguration in April 2009 by Drs. Joan Bassaganyas and Martí Puigfel, the service has carried out over 5,000 invasive procedures, confirming its commitment to excellence in cardiovascular care. Currently, the unit is divided into two sections: the Cardiac Haemodynamics Unit, under the direction of Drs. Joan Bassaganyas and Martí Puigfel, and the Cardiac Arrhythmia Unit, led by Drs. Josep Brugada and Maria Emilce Trucco.

Cardiac haemodynamics unit.
This unit has performed diagnostic coronary angiographies in patients with chest pain, cardiomyopathies, and pre-cardiac surgery studies. It has also treated angina and myocardial infarction using coronary angioplasties with placement of latest-generation drug-eluting stents, balloon angioplasties with drugs, and treatment with shockwave for extremely complex lesions. Furthermore, it has carried out transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI), transcatheter mitral valve repairs (MITRACLIP), and transcatheter repairs of structural heart defects (ASD, PFO, appendage closure, etc.).
Cardiac Arrhythmia Unit.
In this unit, invasive and non-invasive studies are carried out to diagnose the origin of syncope and palpitations. Catheter treatment for various cardiac tachycardias and arrhythmias is offered, including catheter ablation for all types of supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias, extrasystoles, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and atrial fibrillation. All types of cardiac devices are also implanted, such as subcutaneous cardiac monitors, uni-, bi-, and tri-cameral pacemakers, and implantable defibrillators. The unit is a pioneer in the use of new physiological pacing and leadless pacemakers and defibrillators.
Cutting-edge technology and highly skilled personnel.
The Intervention Unit at Clínica Girona is equipped with the most sophisticated and state-of-the-art technology to ensure maximum safety and effectiveness in all procedures. This includes cardiac imaging equipment, radioscopy, transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiogram, three-dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography, the NAVIX three-dimensional mapping system, and radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation equipment.
Furthermore, the unit is supported by cardiac surgery from Dr. Alberto Castro, and a team of highly qualified nursing, auxiliary, and technical staff. This combination allows Clínica Girona to offer an invasive cardiology service capable of carrying out the most sophisticated and complex procedures, always with the aim of providing the best possible treatment for patients.
This anniversary marks an important milestone in the history of Clínica Girona, reaffirming its dedication to medical excellence and its continued commitment to cardiovascular health in the region.
