Girona, 12 April 2022

This afternoon, the inauguration ceremony for the new Clínica Girona took place at 206 Carrer Barcelona in Girona. The event was attended by the President of the Board of Directors of Clínica Girona, Dr. Pere Solà, the Minister of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Josep Maria Argimon, the Minister of Research and Universities, Gemma Geis, and the Mayor of Girona, Marta Madrenas, among other authorities.

Although the new facilities at Clínica Girona will not be in use until 18th April, the health centre's management wanted to hold this inaugural event while there were still no patients, in order to publicly showcase this large building which incorporates the latest technological advances in medicine and healthcare architecture.

In the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Pere Solà wanted to highlight that if this new facility has been able to be built, it is thanks to the effort made over generations by the Girona medical families and all the professionals who have worked and currently work at the Clinic: “The new Clínica Girona is the result of a collective effort,” he stressed. “Clínica Girona is a healthcare company with a public service mission, which was founded in 1934 by Dr. Francesc Coll i Turbau, along with a group of Girona doctors, and has been a member of the XHUP (Network of Public Utility Hospitals, currently SICAT) from day one. Now, with the new building we are inaugurating today, the new Clínica Girona offers the best healthcare provision for Girona, in terms of equipment, technological innovation, professional expertise, and quality healthcare with the best human touch that has always characterised us.” The new building represents an investment of 65 million euros.

An efficient, healthy, accessible and sustainable clinic

The new clinic, located at Carrer de Barcelona 206, triples the space of the current building on Carrer Joan Maragall: it increases from a surface area of approximately 13,000 m² to 41,000 m². It expands all current services, becoming a reference clinic in Catalonia, and the most modern hospital centre incorporating total accessibility, which allows all people, regardless of their motor or sensory abilities, to be treated equally, from their arrival at the centre, during their stay, and upon their departure. “We gain in services for people and move towards the medicine of the future, with short stays in the clinic and more efficient diagnoses,” states manager Carles Espígol.

Currently, Clínica Girona has a staff of around 600 people. The new Clinic has 120 hospital beds, eight high-definition intelligent operating theatres, three delivery rooms and three for endoscopy, eight cubicles in the intensive care unit (ICU) and ten cubicles in the emergency department, a day hospital area, oncology and pain medicine, with 20 individual cubicles, an outpatient minor surgery room and also more haemodialysis rooms. All this with the support of permanent diagnostic imaging, clinical analysis and pathological anatomy services. The new Clinic also has 180 parking spaces in the basements.

The construction works, which lasted three and a half years, were carried out by a temporary union of undertakings led by Construccions Rubau, along with Agefred, from an architectural project by PMMT architects, specialists in hospitals. The site management, quality control, and health and safety management were carried out by the technical architecture company. AT2.

Hundreds of workers from various specialised companies have worked to build a modern, innovative, and functional hospital, serving an efficient, healthy, accessible, and sustainable clinic, committed to people's health. An innovatively healthy building to house the medicine of the future.

Innovative in the design of versatile spaces and aseptic, health-generating materials. Efficient in patient and staff mobility and healthy, with natural light and interior courtyards to improve comfort. Universally accessible: anyone will be able to access anywhere without barriers. And sustainable because it has been designed to guarantee energy and economic savings.
