GIRONA. Wednesday, 2nd February 2022.
Clínica Girona offers a memory box to families who have lost a child during pregnancy or shortly after birth. This box is used to store items that commemorate the baby, with the aim of helping them through their grief. Inside, there is a bonnet or hat, a swaddle to cover the baby, a certificate on which details (name, date of birth, weight, and height) will be included, and seeds to plant, among other items. Clínica Girona has been part of this initiative since April of last year.
The “Memory Box” project originated from two families who had experienced gestational loss. They recognised the need to create mementos of their children, to avoid leaving the hospital empty-handed. Other families have joined this project, participating actively, voluntarily, and altruistically to support those experiencing gestational loss, regardless of the number of weeks of gestation or the cause of death.
Currently, the organisation has delivered over 1,200 boxes to 30 hospitals across Catalonia, which help both healthcare staff and the families who receive them. It is a non-profit association based in Tordera which has over 150 volunteers who artisanally craft each of the elements that make up the boxes.
